Webassign Directions:  Go to www.webassign.com but DO NOT login.  Under the login piece will be a box that says, "I have a class key."  Click this box.  Enter the class key from the syllabus or on Moodle.  Then it will ask you if you have an existing account or need to create one.  This is where you may enter your login information.
Please note the class key starts with "clarkson."  It is not the code that came with your textbook.  WebAssign will NOT be available until the second week of classes.

FAQ-MA 180

·         Do I need to purchase the book from the bookstore?

No.  You should obtain a copy of the text book (it may be in electronic form.)  You will however, need to purchase a webassign package to do the online homework.

·         Which package of webassign do I need to buy?

You should determine this based on your major and the required coursework necessary for that major.  Please speak with your advisor to determine how many math courses you will need.  If you are a business major, then you will need both MA 180 and MA 181.  This is two semesters of math and so you should buy the “life of the edition” package so you will have webassign for two semesters.  A history major only needs MA 180, thus purchasing a one semester package is sufficient.  (If for some reason you do not receive credit/or wish to improve your grade in this course and want to retake the course, then you will need to buy another semester’s access to webassign.  If you are concerned that this may happen, then you may wish to spend the money on the “life of the edition” package.  If you are transferring from MA 131 and are not changing majors then you should buy the single semester package.  If you are changing majors, please contact webassign directly to see if they will swap classes for you (for free or a minimal charge since you will no longer need webassign for that course.)

·         What should I do if I’m enrolling in MA 180 after the add/drop period?

If you are currently enrolled in MA 131 and wish to enroll in MA 180 past the add/drop period, then you will need to be aware of the following information.
I will only allow student to add this class until the end of the 7th week of classes (for the Fall 2012 semester, this date is October 12.)
You will need to bring an add/drop form for me to sign.  You will need to drop MA 131 both the lecture and discussion/recitation.  If you are also enrolled in MA 041 you can also drop that course.  You will need to add MA 180 both the lecture and the discussion/recitation.  Please note that I teach the same lecture twice a day, MA 180-01 meets at 1:00 pm in SC 160 and MA 180-02 meets at 3:00 pm in SC 160.  It does not matter which lecture you attend; it is not necessary to let me know ahead of time which lecture you will attend.  You do need to attend your scheduled discussion/recitation.
You will need to a subscription to webassign for use in this class.  You have already purchased webassign for MA 131 and if you are changing your major, you may be able to contact webassign and transfer the subscription from MA131 to MA 180.  However, if you are not changing majors and are using this course for just this semester, then you will need to go to the
www.webassign.com directly and buy a subscription to this course.  The course key is listed in the syllabus on my website.  If you are only taking the MA 180 course this fall you should select the option of one semester's access.  You would select "life of the edition" if you were to take MA 180 again or enroll in MA 181 next semester, as we will be using webassign again in the spring semester for both MA 180 and MA 181.
You are expected to complete all webassign homeworks already given in this course.  I fully understand that you have done a lot of work in your current placement in MA 131, however, in order to be successful in this course you really need to know the previous material as this course is very cumulative.  Doing this homework will give you the best chance of making this semester count.  Please send me an email (found in the syllabus) once you have registered with webassign.  Include your start date for the class and I will reopen and extend the due dates for you to complete the homework from the beginning of the semester.
You are also expected to complete any recitation quizzes that you have missed so far.  Please let your TA for the recitation know that you are transferring into this course and they will allow you to make up those quizzes.
Any lecture quizzes that you missed can be adjusted for by counting a future lecture quiz twice.
If you have missed the first exam or are entering just prior to an exam, we can discuss ways to adjust for this grade discrepancy.  I will offer different ways to deal with this later in the semester.  It may include counting the final exam for the exam grade you missed.  Or we may decide to average the second and third exams.  We will determine this together.
You should begin coming to class as soon as possible.  I post daily lecture notes on the website.  I encourage you to print them and bring them to class.  You will also find previous exams available on the website.   Any other questions should be answerable from the information on the syllabus.  If you are entering late in the semester, you may find it not financially beneficial to purchase the textbook and can instead share with someone in class.
