SHPE National History

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the City of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community. The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach other countries. SHPE is the largest and fastest growing Hispanic technical organization in the country. SHPE is a national organization of 109 student chapters and 31 professional chapters in over 110 cities across the United States.

SHPE Clarkson History

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at Clarkson University has been an active professional society on campus for the past nine years. SHPE Clarkson was registered as an official SHPE student chapter in 1991. We have experienced tremendous growth over the past nine years despite the lack number of freshman minorities entering Clarkson. Our goals as an organization include recruitment, retention, and the development of professional, interpersonal, and communication skills. In order to realize the goals confirmed in our mission statement, SHPE Clarkson has organized many activities both on and off campus since its establishment. SHPE Clarkson in conjunction with the National Society of Black Engineers at Clarkson, and the American Indian Science and Engineering has brought the Annual Corporate Reception to the Clarkson community for the past five years. SHPE Clarkson holds weekly general meetings where we discuss future plans, inform our members of different career and educational opportunities, and organize events. Academic and personal development programs are also in place to forest a healthy academic and social standing among our members. Plans are in place to hold aggressive outreach activities where SHPE Clarkson can invite local high school students to follow a career in engineering and science through a college degree.
