Chapter 6 "Industrial Giant, Agricultural Superpower"


1) This chapter describes the changes in the Brazilian economy 
that have taken it from a "developing country" that regularly
borrows from the IMF to an "emerging economy" that loans to the 
IMF. Look for statistics or descriptions of this conversion and
the makeup of the current Brazilian economy.


2) Why was inflation in Brazil so devastating to the economy. Describe some of the early efforts to curb inflation in Brazil. What was the Real plan and what was its impact on inflation in Brazil?

3) We will be visiting Embraer. Pay special attention to the description of Embraer. Give some statistics about its size and impact.

4) What is the role of agriculture in the Brazilian economy?  What are 
some of the primary agricultural commodities produced in Brazil?

5) What has Brazil done to diversify its trading partners?  What
does this chapter say about the balance of imports and exports? See if you can find some more recent data online.

6) We will visit Bovespa in São Paulo. What is Bovespa? Pay particular 
attention to the details given in this chapter about Bovespa and list some here.

7) Is there anything else in this chapter that you found especially
interesting?


8) As you read make a list of questions that you have that you might
either want to ask one of our video chat guests or hosts (or perhaps
