HYDRAULICS OF FLOW IN VEGETATED CHANNELS
R.A.: B.M. Stone
The significant limitations of the conventional bed resistance formulas to vegetated
channels has been well recognized. In this study, the effect of vegetation on hydraulics
in river channels is investigated. An analytical formulation for predicting the flow
velocity is developed. This formulation requires only basic information consisting of flow
depth, channel slope, vegetations dimensions and stem density. Both submerged and emergent
conditions are considered. An extensive series of laboratory flume experiments were
carried out to validate the formulation. The formulation is also validated with
experimental data from past investigations.
