LF310 -- Greek Mythology -- Fall 2001

Final Project and Presentation

Greek myth has contined to engage poets, dramatists, filmmakers, composers, and artists of all types. In Imperial Rome, in Renaissance and Enlightenment Europe, and in the entire western world of the 19th and 20th centuries, Greek myths were adapted and changed to fit the needs of the culture in question. Choose your group, then choose a myth (or cluster or myths) that has continued to engage artists, and trace the changes in the representation of that myth, citing what you think is responsible for those changes. Perhaps the simplest format would be PowerPoint, plus your written essay (10 to 12 pages).

Where can you find images of sculpture and painting, or references to literary works, films, or music? The last 2 chapters of our text, chapter 25, "The Survival of Classical Mythology in Literature and Art," and chapter 26, "Classical Mythology in Music and Film, are the first places you should look. The companion website for the text also lists these items for each chapter. Each chapter has a bibliography; if you begin now, you should be able to get texts.
