Midterm Progress Report
At this point in the semester my work for COSI is progressing nicely. The servers are now all running Debian Linux so they can receive prompt security updates. Two more raid units have been brought online and the rack that holds them has been rewired. They both are running in raid 5 and hold 110 GB each. A new lab build that is based on Fedora Core 3 will likely be completed the week that I get back from break. There are just minor problems with rpm dependencies that need to be dealt with before it can be deployed. It will solve some of the stability problems and allow us to use new technologies such as selinux.
My work on my group's osdl contest entry is progressing nicely. I've got a basic working python command line client that can query guests and boot them up or shut them down. We also have a clear goal of what we need to do. Several of these tasks are programming intensive such as creating python bindings for filesystem creation, lvm management. We probably be encrypting the xend daemon. We've installed xen and have installed several different guest operating systems including Debian and Gentoo Linux. We have a workshop scheduled for the Wednesday after break on installing Xen under Ubuntu Linux. We plan on walking people through installing Xen and one or two file backed virtual machines.
