Welcome

Welcome to the VRWC webpage. I'll try to keep the page up to date with new developments with the project. You can contact Evren Ozan Baran for more information.

What is VRWC all about?

The Virtual Reality Wheelchair projects involves a complex design and
integration challenge. The project involves the design and fabrication of
all of the parts of a simulation of a powered wheelchair. Currently, powered
wheelchairs can be very expensive (up to $20000) and insurance companies are
reluctant to help a family purchase one for their child if the child has not
yet demonstrated his/her capability to operate one. This VRWC simulator will
be used to train a person to effectively operate powered wheelchair in a safe
VR environment where a trainer can oversee operations. If this simulation is
very accurate and the training proves effective, then the goal will be to have
insurance companies accept this as training for a powered wheelchair. Thereby,
making it easier for families to obtain these wheelchairs for their children.

Some Technical Information
  • Java3D is used for 3D simulation.
  • VRML is our external file format. All drawings are done in VRML
  • XML is our external file format for defining wheelchairs.
  • ISB software is going to be used to generate 3D worlds in VRML format
