The Voice of Lucifer Dies
Mercedes McCambridge, famous for (among other things) playing the terrifically distorted voice of Satan in The Excorcist,
died at 85 this week.

I read Blatty's novel when I was in fifth grade (cribbed it from my mom's nightstand--she was a little disconcerted when she found it under my bed) but I didn't see the movie until I was in college. I watched it again last year; it's still in my top ten list of movies.

Hey, I did the same thing with The Shining. Brought it in as my book for "sustained silent reading" during Right to Read Week in third grade. Mom got a call from the teacher that afternoon...to which she responded "yeah, he reads novels in several genres; I try not to let him read Stephen King before bedtime though. Would you prefer an Ellery Queen mystery? He likes those too"
