Committee acknowledges universities not p2p police

A Slashdot article reports that the Joint Committee of the Higher Education and Entertainment Communities has published "Background Discussion of Copyright Law and Potential Liability for Students Engaged in P2P File Sharing on University Networks".

Colleges and universities are under no legal obligation to defend, or accept responsibility for, the illegal actions of their students in the P2P context. A major step toward ending unlawful P2P activities on college and university campuses lies in education.

The Committee includes broad representation, ranging from the Presidents of Stanford, University of North Carolina, and Yale on the education side and execs from RIAA, MPAA, and others.

The report is available as a 1689k PDF file. Posted by johndan at August 13, 2003 10:45 AM | TrackBack
