Integrated Research Project: Big Data and the Adirondacks

Adirondack Semester

Spring 2017 - 3 credits

Winter comes to Whiteface - Jeanna Matthews

Overview

This semester as part of the Adirondack Semester, the Integrated Research Project will focus on big data and the Adirondacks. By talking to government agencies, non-profits, businesses, researchers and individuals, students will investigate the types of data being collected about the Adirondacks today and how they are used to inform policy and decision making - from counting the number of bird species, to monitoring air quality, to counting the number of hikers on a trail, to surveying public sentiment about land development proposals.

This Integrated Research Project will integrate with the other classes students are taking this semester. In other classes, students will record personal journals, engage in ethnographic observations and surveys, count animal species and monitor weather data and conduct interviews with regional businesses.

Students will engage in a number of other hands-on data collection projects and ultimately propose a set of data that ADK students could collect each semester as part of the Clarkson Adirondack Semester experience to form a long-term study of how Saranac Lake and the Adirondacks are changing over time.

Students will learn about the computing technologies that enable data collection and storage. We will reflect on the role of data collection and analysis in modern society - for good and bad - and in particular, we will consider the degree of data collection and surveillance, even in one of the wilder places on earth ("Forever Wild").

Students will also consider whether Clarkson could play a role in making Adirondack data sets available online.

Saturday 1/21 Saranac Six - St. Regis Mountain
St. Regis Mountain
Hike with the NPT and Laurentian chapters of the ADK. This hike is approximately 6.6 miles RT with rewarding views and a recently restored fire tower at the summit. 1266 ft. elevation gain. Level 3-4. Must have winter gear and must contact trip leader to participate.

Saturday 2/18 Saranac Six - MacKenzie and Haystack
Hike with the NPT chapter of the ADK. This is a strenuous snowshoe with the goal of climbing both MacKenzie and Haystack mountains. MacKenzie will be first and Haystack will be attempted if the trip leader determines there is enough time to complete the trip by sunset. Participants should be able to maintain a 1.5 - 2 mph pace over 12 miles. Contact trip leader by February 5 to sign up. Must have winter gear.
Sunday 2/19 Saranac Six - Haystack
Hike with the NPT chapter of the ADK. This 6.6 mile snowshoe gains about 1,300 feet in elevation and is generally a moderate climb with a final steeper climb. This is part of the Saranac 6 and should not be confused with the high peak Haystack. Participants should be able to hike at a 1.5 - 2 mph pace. Contact trip leader by February 5 to sign up. Must have winter gear.
Saturday 2/25 Saranac Six - Scarface
Hike with NPT and Laurentian chapters of the ADK. This hike is 6.8 miles RT with a 1480 ft. ascent. Level 4. While there isn’t a summit view, this trail wanders through the forest and past several brooks, making it a beautiful winter hike. Must have winter gear and must contact trip leader to participate.
Sunday 3/5 Saranac Six - Baker and Ampersand Mountain
Hike with the NPT and Laurentian chapters of the ADK. Trips to both Baker and Ampersand coordinated such that you can do both or either. Baker Mountain is the shortest climb of the Saranac 6ers. This trip is approximately 1.8 miles RT with 884 ft. ascent. Level 3. Must have winter gear and must contact trip leader to participate.
Ampersand is a fun and challenging hike with great views and includes some steep areas. This 4.9 mile out and back snowshoe ascends to 3352 feet. Snowshoes, microspikes and all needed winter gear are required. Must contact trip leader by January 29 to sign up.
