IM Survey Results
I've posted a first pass at the
results of the Instant Messenger survey I ran a few months back.
Two quick caveats:
- This is a self-selected group. I posted an invitation to take the survey to a Clarkson student-run website (Clarkson Daily Jolt) and sent it to a handful of colleagues and asked them to invite their own students. The resulting group leans heavily toward engineering and computer science majors, towards male (75% or so), and towards college-aged (average age, 20.5 years).
- I haven't double-checked the data for errors in calculations of averages, totals, etc. They all look reasonable, but take everything with a grain of salt.
- Some of the questions, in hindsight, look a little clunky and probably don't get at things as well as they might.
Still, my goal with this wasn't to try to discover universal laws of Instant Messenger use. Instead, I wanted to see some specifics about how people use Instant Messenger, particularly those who use computers extensively.
