This semester we shall discuss the relationships among power, war, and the construction of political identity. Each text has been chosen to enliven our discussion of how individuals gain identity through the exercise of power and how groups gain identity through waging war.
This section of Great Ideas is based on the careful analysis of texts, through discussion and written response and through the consideration of historical context. As such, your responsibilities will be to prepare each text carefully for class discussion; to answer questions prepared for you in advance of class; to use selected websites for class preparation; to write 4 formal papers. Your grade will determined as follows: 4 papers, 20% each; class participation (which includes preparation, homework, quizzes, and class discussion), 20%.
More than 3 absences will seriously affect your final grade.
Note: the syllabus is subject to change.
