Topic:

1. Describe the ways in which different aspects of modern (today) war and its technology affect various aspects of modern (today) society.

You do not need to discuss the Renaissance, but it may help you to look below at the kind of changes that occurred in the Renaissance as a result of new technology and power structure:

• The ways in which Renaissace military revolutions changed the social and geopolitical structure:
• Armies were larger
• Wars lasted longer
• New technology changed wars:
  • Cannons were expensive
  • New fortifications were expensive
  • War costs skyrocketed
• Wars were fought on different fronts
• New ship design put cannons aboard ships
• Europeans began to fight their wars in distant places
• Only the most powerful rulers could afford war
• Monarchies became centralized
• Dynastic states began to form
• European balances of power shifted
• Soldiers now drawn from the lower classes
• More soldiers died
• Atrocities did occur

Specifications:

1. The paper should be 2 pages doublespaced, plus a separate cover sheet
2. Type your paper
3. Give your paper a title
4. Staple your pages together if you want me to grade your paper
5. Use specific examples from the texts we have read
6. If you use illustrations, put them at the end of your paper and label them, such as: fig. 1, fig. 2, etc. These will be extra pages, not the 2 required.
7. I will not accept late papers
8. Since this is a formal essay, your writing must follow the rules of spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar. The first three are mechanical and can be checked easily with your word-processor or by careful editing. Do your best to have your essay be grammatically correct; if you have problems or questions, see me.
9. Avoid plagiarism by acknowledging sources of ideas that do not originate with you, including the ideas of another student.
10. Upload your paper to turnitin.com before class.

Instructions for turnitin:

• You should already have created an account on turnitin. Just login and upload your paper to the new assignment, Paper 3 War and Society.

• If for some reason you have not created a profile, follow the instructions below.

• Go to the website www.turnitin.com
• Click on New User in the upper right hand corner of the page
• In the drop down menu select user type, choose student
  • click next
• For turnitin class ID, type: 1458560
• For turnitin class enrollment password, type: stsren
  • click next
• You are now enrolled in the class LC395
• To access the class, type in your e-mail address
  • click next
• Create your user profile by creating your own personal password (not the class password)
  • confirm your password
  • click next
• From the drop-down menu, select a secret question
  • Type in the answer
  • click next
• Type in your first name, then your last name
  • click next
• Read the user agreement, then click I agree (or disagree, which will cancel the process)
• You have now created a User Profile
• Click end wizard and log in
• On the home page for turnitin.com, type in your e-mail adress and your own personal password
• From this point, you should be able to upload your paper to Paper 3 War and Society.
