In 1976, after graduation of D.I. Mendeleyev Chemical University, I got a junior-scientist staff position at the Institute of Photosynthesis of Russian Academy of Sciences in Pushchino. Simultaneously I started my Ph.D. study that was conducted in the Institute of Photosynthesis and A.N.  Frumkin Institute of Electrochemistry (Moscow).

I studied electrochemical transformation of light energy into electricity and formation of energy-rich products in photochemical reactions induced by natural chlorophyll - type pigments in multi-component artificial systems. This subject was a part of a big academic project: "Artificial Photosynthesis". Development of photogalvanic cells, hydrogen evolution and water oxidation photosensitized by chlorophyll and pheophytin, respectively, were the main achievements of this study.

As a result of this study in 1983 I got a doctoral degree (Ph.D. in Chemistry). Then I moved to another group in the Institute and started a new scientific project: "Photosynthetic Reaction Centers Electrically Contacted with Chemically Modified Electrodes". In the course of this project I developed novel methods of electrode modifications and photosynthetic protein reconstitution and immobilization. The main achievements of this study include:

silanization of noble metals (Au and Pt) (#22, #23 in the publication list),

chemisorption of thiols and disulfides on Au and Pt electrodes (#24, #28, #40 in the publication list),

  preparation of quinonoid modified electrodes (#10, #11, #22, #23, #26, #27, #40 in the publication list),

selective protein immobilization resulting in alignment of the biomolecules (#21, #29, #35 in the publication list),

development of photobioelectrodes based on photosynthetic reaction centers (#21, #29, #35, #39 in the publication list).

My research was awarded by the Institute authorities (Institute Recognition Awards: 1980, 1983, and 1989) and in 1983 I got a senior scientist staff position in the Institute.

Then the door in the USSR border has been open......
