Due: Reading Day, 30 July 2005
Length: 4-6 pages
Topic: Art and Myth
- Choose one important artwork we have looked at this
summer.
- Briefly describe the myth or saga to which it relates
- Discuss the visual representation
- what type of representation
- i.e., painting, sculpture, private, monumental
- date of the representation
- author -- if known
- disucss all recognizable details and figures
- whether it illustrates a specific element/episode
- whether it adds a significant element
- whether it differs from the written version
- Finally, discuss at length what it tells us about the meaning or value
of the myth for the time period in which the visual representation appears
- E.g., if it illustrates a scene from Homer, but appears in the
5th century, what does it choose to emphasize that might be different
from Homer's emphasis
- E.g., if it is a monumental sculpture illustrating a labor of
Herakles, what does it emphasize that might be significant in the
time it appears?
