Is the campus "really" safe?

    Yes. Particularly when you compare Clarkson's crime rate to other colleges and universities of similar size, our crime rate is relatively low. This is primarily due to Clarkson's location and the team approach fostered by the department, which empowers every member of the campus community as an active part of the campus safety initiative.

Does the campus have an emergency "Blue Light" phone system?

Yes. The University has installed eleven emergency phones, stratically located throughout the campus. The phones have a rapid push button contact with emergency response 24 hours a day.

Is the campus patrolled?

    Yes. Six full time Proctors patrol the campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What other personnel make up the department?

    There is a departmental secretary and a part time ticket writer. The Assistant Dean of Students/Director, Campus Safety & Judicial Affairs reports directly to the Vice President of Student Affairs and is primarily responsible for administrating the area.

What are some of the other services offered?

    Their primary service provided is a reasonably safe enviroment in which to work and learn. In addition to conducting foot and vehicular patrol for the entire campus, you and your parents might also like to know that some of the specific services provided include

    • Rendering Emergency first aid
    • Unlocking room doors (in accordance with University policy guidelines)
    • Registering all vehicles for parking privilege on campus
    • Notifying campus and community of emergencies
    • Providing educational programs for students
    • Providing night escort from one campus facility to another
    • Issuing University IDs
    • Assisting motorists with minor problems or calling for service
    • Conducting crime prevention programs
    • Providing emergency transportation to and from the local hospital
    • Registering and storing all weapons (handguns are not allowed on campus)
    • Providing training for residence hall staff
    • Traffic and parking supervision

Are campus crime statistics readily?

    Yes. In accordance with the Student Right-to-Know Act of 1990 the University must provide information pertaining to crime statistics and security measures to prospective students, matriculated students, and employees.

Is there a close working relationship with local police?

    Yes. The Proctor staff is not empowered to enforce the law. Crimes are referred to the Village of Potsdam Police for action. The Proctors work closely with local law enforcement agencies in aiding with the investigation of crimes committed on campus.

As a freshman, am I allowed to have a vehicle on campus?

    Yes. This privilage is conditioned upon registering the vehicle with the University and remaining in compliance with the University policy governing student use of motor vehicles. You must present your state motor vehicle registration, when registering your vehicle on campus.

Is there a fee for registering my vehicle?

    Not presently. A Parking Task Force is currently reviewing this issue in conjunction with a comprehensive assessment of the University's current and future parking needs.

Is there a shuttle bus service available to students?

    Yes. The shuttle bus operates Monday through Saturday. There is a small fee to ride the bus, or you may purchase passes for the bus at the Student Senate Office.

Are Clarkson's residence halls locked at night?

    Residence halls are electronically locked down at 10:00pm each evening and unlock at 7:00am the next morning (with the exception of Congdon House).Each resident is authorized access to their wing only via an access card that also serves as the University ID. In addition, each residence hall room has a dead bolt lock and a peep hole, to facilitate the identification of guests. Campus apartment facilities are not electronically locked, but are equipped with dead blot locks and peep holes.

What is "Judicial Affairs"?

    It is primarily the governance of student behavior. Each student is expected to become a positive citizen in the campus community. Much of the definition of acceptable behavior springs from the Code of Student Conduct as articulated in the Clarkson Regulations. Proctors and student staff, i.e. Resident Advisors , are responsible for enforcing the Code of Student Conduct and University policy. The Assistant Dean/Director serves as the primary judicial officer for violations of University regulations. Violations are typically adjudicated within an educational framework and consistent with the mission of the University. Referral for prosecution is an option available for particularly egregious and/or criminal violations.
