Implantable Defibrillators

Over 100,000 people die each year of sudden cardiac death. For those at high risk for SCD, the primary treatment is implantation of life-saving device called an implantable defibrillator which delivers a defibrillation shock, just like those performed on the surface of the body. Even though over a half a million of these devices are implanted in the United States, improvements in the computer algorithms that make the decision when to deliver therapy are still needed to ensure that a shock is only given when needed and that a life-threatening event always receives therapy.
