1) Assignment: City Fact Sheet

Please prepare a one-page fact sheet of "your" city: Los Angeles, or New York. Choose one of the following topics to explore as a team:

1) Spatial organization of the city (is there a center or many centers, where are suburbs, where are inner-cities, where are business downtowns, where are economic rather than residential areas, is there sprawl, what are the transportation systems, distribution of green spaces and parks, waterways, etc., layout of the city, layout of streets…?)

2) Demographics (socio-demographic factors, racial and ethnic distribution, percentage of immigrants, immigration patterns, from where, changes in the city and its people, etc. use census data)

3) Myths about the city (what does the city represent in the popular imagination, what are the good areas, what are the bad areas, ….)

• I will make maps available to you. Please treat them gently and return them after use (except for the photocopied ones).
• Check the Links to Info about New York, Los Angeles for background materials, particularly for Berlin. But most likely you will have to try to find information on the web or elsewhere in addition. Try to come up with a brief but complex data sheet that conveys critical information in an effective and efficient way.
• Your fact sheet will be necessarily incomplete. Decide what you would consider the most critical or interesting information and focus on that.
• Present this fact sheet in a power-point presentation as a team and make enough copies for everyone in the class (about 20).
• Make copies of your fact sheet
• Be prepared to give a brief 2 minute presentation explaining your fact sheet in class. Make enough copies of your fact sheets for all of us.
