COURSE OBJECTIVES

·         Understand the difference between race and ethnicity

·         Describe the history of race in science

·         Describe why race is not a biological category

·         Explain why race does not exist as a biological category, but has great significance as a social category

·         Explain the dynamics of dominant and subordinate groups and their relationships to each other

·         Understand the terms: prejudice, discrimination, stereotypes

·         Recognize the difference between individual versus systemic discrimination

·         Identify examples of racial inequality and track them through various quantitative (US Census, etc.) and qualitative (legal means, etc.) tools

·         Understand the concept of racial formation

·         Recognize the similarities and differences in the experiences of various racial groups

·         Describe how white privilege works
