Quicksilver:

Quicksilver is quite literally an application launcher on
Steroids. With the aid of various plugins, the potentials for
Quicksilver are limitless. It will do anything from moving
files
about on your computer, to acting like a calculator, to running shell
scripts, to changing your desktop background, to playing music on
iTunes... and everything in between.
As a result, it would be impossible to explain all of Quicksilver's
many features on this page. Instead, I will attempt to
introduce
you to quicksilver and explain a few of its more basic
features.
The rest is up to you :-)
Once
you have quicksilver installed, you can simply double click it to
begin. A flashy white logo will show up, and then quicksilver
will dissapear into the background. To activate it, the
default
key combination is "Apple-Space"
|
Press
these keys
and you will
see an elegant bezel appear above all your aps. Now try
typing
the names of some applications or Documents you know you have on your
computer. You will notice that while you type, Quicksilver
will
instantly start to search for anything that contains the letters you
searched for... placing the most likely one in the bezel
window.
|

|
As soon as you stop typing, another
window
will
pop out of the top one... containing a list of other possible
matches. You can browse this list using the arrow keys and
select
the item you were looking for.
Once you have selected the item you were looking for, press enter...
and walla! open!
|

|
Now
lets try doing
something a little different. Sure it's nice to open
Applications
and files and stuff... but wouldnt it be nice to do something
more? What if I wanted to move a file or manipulate it in
some
other way? Fortunately, quicksilver does this.. and
more.
|
Open quicksilver again (with the
"Apple-Space"
keys and type something else in for Quicksilver to find.
However, instead of just hitting return, press the tab key followed by
the down arrow. This will list all of the possible operations
you
can perform on the item you previously selected
|

|
Now
by using the up and
down arrows, you can perform any of these options. They range
from anything as simple as renaming a file, to launching another
instance of an application. And with plugins, you can add
many
many more.
Now lets try looking at how this program works, and modify some of its
settings. We can do this through the preferences.
To do
this, you must open quicksilver again (Apple-Space) and click the
little triangle at the top right of the window. From here,
a popup menu will appear from which you can selec the
preferences
pane. You should get something that looks like the following:
|

|
From
here, you can change
anything from the look of quicksilver to the catalog of files it
references. This cann be very useful becuase it allows you to
tell Quicksilver which files to search.
Probably the most useful feature is the ability to add
plugins.
You can find most of them at:
http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/plugins.php?feature=2
Well, that just bairly scrapes the surface of what quicksilver can do,
so I encourage you to play with it and try out some of the more amazing
features. I can guarentee, if you use quicksilver you wont
remember how you survived without it.
