Climbing

Climbing, whether ice or rock, is serious business for CUOC. Although it usually takes a little driving, here in the North Country we have access to some superb climbing. In the fall and spring we rock climb at Keene Valley, McKenzie Pond, Chapel Pond and South Colton. We take a few trips a year farther afield to the Gunks in New Paltz, Red River Gorge in Kentucky and New River Gorge in West Virginia.

When the weather gets cold (as it is most of the year in the North Country) we ice climb at some of the best spots in the east. The Adirondack Park is quickly being recognized as a premiere ice climbing destination, and it is a mere twenty minutes away, affording us superb opportunities. For the non-ice climber, we have an excellent indoor gym with toproping, and a great deal of bouldering. Year round we open the wall six days a week from six o'clock to ten and you will frequently find someone down there even at other times.

The Outing Club has all the necessary equipment for ice climbing and rock climbing. We have toprope and lead climbing equipment and crash pads for bouldering. For the experienced climber, we loan out our equipment, and we also lead trips almost every week that educate the inexperienced.

The prices are free for active Outing Club members, $1 for club members, and $3 for non-members. For the serious gym climber we offer semester memberships for $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Come check out our wall in the basement of Congdon at the downtown Clarkson campus.

To check if the wall is open for climbing, please call (315)-268-3902. If you get a busy signal, someone is probably at the wall. If you get a recording on the conditions of Cogdon, it is likely no one is there (however, sometimes people forget so no guarantees!).
